When New Orleans Airport planned its new passenger terminal, my team represented the city at Aviation Board meetings, actively shaping its future. We offered design recommendations aimed at reflecting the city’s unique cultural heritage and proposed engaging renowned architect Cesar Pelli as the lead designer. This collaboration led to a transportation gateway that captures the region’s rich cultural and architectural diversity.
Open stages are placed around the terminal, allowing brass bands to play sets around the airport for significant regional events. Local artists have enhanced the space with original works celebrating the area’s flora and fauna, creating a deeper connection to the local environment and culture. These elements together foster an inviting atmosphere, transforming the airport into a true reflection of New Orleans’ vibrant identity.
Key design considerations included gate volume, passenger drop-off and pickup, and service access. Notably, Louis Armstrong Airport features separate drop-off and pickup areas, accommodating peak demand without disruption.
